The boys in his series—fluid, fragile, sometimes fierce—speak volumes through subtle glances and soft limbs.

Published in titles like Vogue Italia, Tatler, and Gay Times, Zak’s work exists at the glittery intersection of queer sensuality and high art. A pretty erotic set of circumstances leading to a denouement that I should have seen coming - the religious are often twisted.

As his true ending is not known to history, this was necessarily an imagining of his final days.

In between? And an affirmation that it's not always the older guy who makes the running.

If it weren't for the two jewels, this would have got a two. The NSFW project is a moody, intimate, and sometimes stark exploration of masculinity that challenges the rigid norms of what a man is “supposed” to look like.

The first of these featured Hall singing his order at a McDonald's drive-thru window and generated considerable viewership; by 2012, he had graduated to full-blown musical tributes, including "Beauty and the Beat," which refashioned the Disney musical as an urban fantasy, and a promotional short for Virgin Airlines which detailed its pre-flight safety briefing as an R&B music video.

Hall toured with a live version of the show in 2016, shortly before taking over the role of cross-dressing powerhouse Lola in the Broadway run of the musical "Kinky Boots" that same year.

I liked A Normal Guy particularly for its reading of the situation for gay guys in Romania - casual homophobia but more or less an acceptance of other lifestyles.

One video, a "Wizard of Oz" (1939) parody titled "The Wizard of Ahhhs" (2013) which featured the vocal group Pentatonix, generated over 4 million viewers, which attracted the attention of manager Scooter Braun, whose clients included pop star Justin Bieber. “I’m captivated by people,” Zak has said—and it shows in every frame.

Really, if you have nothing useful to say or no story to tell, just be quiet and choose another career.

The absolute rubies amongst the dross? In a media landscape still saturated with binary gender tropes and rigid expectations, seeing male tenderness spotlighted is a radical act. As I said right at the beginning, this is unfair on all of the films - some deserved a one and others an eight.

In 2016, Hall issued a "visual album" for "Straight Outta Oz," a new musical based on the classic musical with guest contributions by fellow "Idol" vet Jordin Sparks and singer Nicole Scherzinger. This isn’t masculinity for marketing. Queer folks have always reimagined what masculinity can look like; Zak simply frames it for the mainstream to notice.

His subjects aren’t just posing; they’re revealing. Some failed their exam, some passed.
