He also begins to fall in love.

As Chucky series creator Don Mancini told SYFY in an interview after the Season 1 finale of his new show on SYFY & USA, horror is "a genre about outsiders; the beauty of being an outsider," which is why crossovers between the LGBTQ+ community and the horror genre are so common.

Along with delivering deliciously dark humour, gore, mayhem, and a reliably high body count, the terrifically entertaining Chucky the series—now in its third season on USA and SYFY—has been warming the hearts of horror fans with a tender queer romance at the heart of show.

It also falls into the great teen LGBTQ+ TV show group because it’s one of the most openly queer horror shows on television.

Chucky is more of a drama-comedy than a straight drama but it’s one of the most captivating shows that has a queer teen character as the lead. Jake’s queerness is very much ingrained in the story.

In the above video, we've highlighted Chucky's allyship throughout Season 1, but in talking to Mancini, it becomes clear how much nuance there is to Chucky's interest in the matter of queerness.

Mancini says that, in short, yes, Chucky is a queer ally. Maybe in the future, main characters like Jake will become the norm, not the exception.

I love all of the movie references that we get in different layers in Chucky, like Taxi Driver in the first part of the season and then there’s a very brief glimpse of Blade Runner in the season finale. At Its Heart, Chucky Is A Coming Of Age Story About A Queer Teen

Chucky Season 1 focuses a lot on Jake knowing his sexuality but being afraid to embrace it because of his father, family, and just the general prejudices against gay people, especially sometimes from other young people and authority figures.

Representation matters and that means in all aspects of media, even the bloodiest ones.

And, Chucky Is A Very Inclusive Series When It Comes To Gender And Sexualities

Jennifer Tilly’s Tiffany is bisexual. I am sure many queer teens appreciate having a show like Chucky that isn’t afraid to show queer sexuality without losing the part that includes teens just being horny.

It’s One Of The Few Horror Series With A Gay Lead Character

I will admit that I don’t know all the horror series past or present, but I have seen a decent amount of them.

Britt's work has also been published in Fangoria, TV Guide, and SXSWorld Magazine. So it’s great that the world has turned to accommodate that.”

Apart from Jake’s dad, who is unaccepting of him, Jake and Devon don’t really encounter much homophobia and they’re accepting of themselves.
