Although established in the late 1990s, Spongebob Squarepants took off in the early 2000s, and special interest groups like the American Family Association noticed the quirky invertebrate’s lack of a romantic life and occasional queer-coded behavior.
And Disney, I would like to think, is a little bit more fabulous."
"Especially if it's about a teenage pop star wearing a wig," she said.
But over the years, Nickelodeon secretly helped pioneer some of television’s first LGBTQ+ content for kids.
One of the most noteworthy examples of Nickelodeon’s contributions to LGBTQ+ culture in the 1990s came in Rocko’s Modern Life, season 4, episode 7, “Closet Clown,” an episode that metaphorically explored homosexuality, coming out, and acceptance by having Rocko’s neighbor Mr.

Throughout the 2000s, blossoming Disney gays were also blessed with plenty of other small-screen idols to look up to, including High School Musical‘s Sharpay Evans, London Tipton from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and, of course, Zac Efron as iconic heartthrob Troy Bolton — all of whom hit the Disney Channel in roughly the same era as Hannah Montana.

The topic came up when host Jimmy Kimmel asked the superstar about the last time she’d watched an episode of her iconic Disney Channel series Hannah Montana, which ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2011.
“I’m surrounded by gays,” Cyrus quipped.
I could seriously listen to her talk for days on end, and I wanna hear more of her Disney-Nickelodeon theories — because this one is mind-blowing.
What are your thoughts on Miley's hilarious '00s Disney comments? The Secret LGBTQ+ Nickelodeon Characters Of The 1990s
In the 1990s, LGBTQ+ characters started appearing in tv shows like South Park, Ellen, and Will & Grace, which able to include their content openly.

Nickelodeon shows also broke boundaries by heavily implying a romance between Korra and Asami in The Legend of Korrawith behind-the-scenes concerns barely preventing the creators from being able to make the relationship explicit, and introducing multiple LGBTQ+ characters on 2016’s The Loud House, including Dana Dufresne; one of the few transgender characters to appear on the channel.
Explicitly LGBTQ+ Characters In Current Nickelodeon
Although current television still sees backlash, many have fallen in love with LGBTQ+ tv shows like Love, Victor, The Owl House, and Heartstopper.
All in the 2000s.
But on May 22, Miley appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and explained something so mind-blowing, I fear I'll never be the same. Also, unlike in the 1990s, as with other holidays, celebrations, and acknowledgments, the “first cable network for kids” now recognizes Pride month and the characters who celebrate it.
Once hidden behind subtext and innuendo, Nickelodeon now celebrates Pride publicly with old and new characters alike.
Over three decades since its conception, Nickelodeon doesn’t need subtlety anymore, and now it seems LGBTQ+ representation only grows. "So I introduced them to Hannah Montana, and obviously they were gagged."
Jimmy then asked her if she still had the iconic Hannah wig, to which Miley responded, "Of course." (Phew.) "I have a couple looks, too.
