The flawed friendship between the nonbinary police officer and queer youth suffering under the wilderness-driven education methods of Evelyn Wade (Toni Collette) was earnest and endearing. The director plays Dennis, an awkward man who meets the grieving Roman (Dylan O’Brien, in an extraordinary performance) at a support group for people mourning their twins and falls into a co-dependent friendship with him.
Her widowed 48-year-old mother, Hwei-Lan Gao (Joan Chen), is obsessed with getting her married to a man, despite knowing she’s a lesbian. After Sin-Dee’s best friend, Alexandra (Mya Taylor), tells her the news, they set out on a Christmas Eve chase for the other woman, Dinah (Mickey O’Hagan).
But there’s more to “Heated Rivalry,” an adaptation of a romance novel by author Rachel Reid, that helped propel this low-budget Canadian production into a sleeper hit.
Cay (Patricia Charbonneau) is a local woman who has a reputation about town. The setting, New York City, is as much a character as Feña, and its frenetic pace underscores the movie’s emotional impact.

“Heated Rivalry”
“Heated Rivalry” went viral because of its sex scenes, and although the scandalized reactions might be a bit hyperbolic, they mostly live up to the hype: the sweaty, noisy, and unbearably intimate moments where the show’s two main characters get undressed and get on top of each other are some of the hottest in recent TV memory.
But when Hwei-Lan becomes pregnant out of wedlock, she is kicked out by her parents, Wil’s grandparents, and moves in with her daughter. It stars co-director Matthew Fifer as Ben, a bisexual white guy from Long Island who’s just recently come to terms with his sexuality, and Sheldon D. Brown as Sam, a closeted gay Black man with a successful career in tech.
But as the movie unfolds and their romance deepens, the question becomes whether or not Johan can handle William’s identity.
When he reaches adulthood, the wealthy professor Paulo (Raul Cortez) takes responsibility for him, helping him find a job and a place to live. The film holds a 97 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And you can’t miss My Own Private Idaho, a cult classic helmed by Gus Van Sant, starring River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves in a raw, gritty tale of friendship and unrequited love that leaves a lasting impression.

That Mackay has made four features in just six years — all this confident and increasingly playful — marks her as a force to watch. The film is set for a US theatrical release in February 2026 through Kino Lorber.
Lilies Not for Me
Lilies Not for Me is set in 1920s England.
That attention crystallizes in Peter McVries (David Jonsson), a gay character delivered with exceptional warmth and clarity. Meanwhile, his sister-in-law Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) begins her own secret romance with a woman, Sandra (Sasha Calle). What follows should be kept a surprise, but just keep in mind that the writer and director, Jane Schoenbrun, has said they wrote it about two months into their gender transition.
