While the days are given ordinal numbers, the song skips the cardinal numbers in the verses, and the rhythm is sometimes off: “On the second day of kindergarten / I thought it was so cool / making lots of friends / and riding the bus to my school!” The narrator is a white brunette who wears either a tunic or a dress each day, making her pretty easy to differentiate from her classmates, a nice mix in terms of race; two students even sport glasses.

I was mortified. I guess you the buyer be the judge.

I know that  talking about  gender, sexuality,  and  LGBTQIA+  (lesbian,  gay, bisexual, transgender,  queer, intersex, asexual, and more!) issues with kids can be challenging, so I hope reading The GayBCs with your small human(s) makes it easier and more fun!

Hi there!

I played with the boys and the girls. Kids are growing up in an increasingly confusing world and this certainly isn't helping. You can do these activities one-on-one or with a group. I'm all for inclusion, but these topics for little kids are just more noise, which parents then have to explain. I didn't wind up confused. The topic will likely come up in discussion at some point later on when they're older, unless they've already been exposed to unsavoury and inappropriate behaviours, or, alternatively, they have gay parents (which may require some explanation and it's simple - sometimes people like people that have the same body parts).

Thank you so, so much for picking up The GayBCs! Nobody told me I couldn't play with trucks and had to play with dolls and we raised our child to enjoy what she enjoyed without turning it into a gender identity experience.

This guide has simple and clever ideas for talking about the words and concepts explored in The GayBCs in order to deepen the contextual understanding with your kids.

If you're trying to be inclusive, you be inclusive. Why is Dr. Seuss the scapegoat for evil, yet a book that promotes sexual identity to toddlers an preschoolers, not? Does the world really need an ABC explainer on various alternative lifestyles for toddlers and little kids?

The children in the ink, paint, and collage digital spreads show a variety of emotions, but most are happy to be at school, and the surroundings will be familiar to those who have made an orientation visit to their own schools.

While this is a fairly bland treatment compared to Deborah Lee Rose and Carey Armstrong-Ellis’ The Twelve Days of Kindergarten (2003), it basically gets the job done.

I read it.
