I found that extremely moving.
“Oh, I think so,” he says. And, as they salute their old friend Frank √¢¬Ä¬ì√Ç it√¢¬Ä¬ôs quite clear what happened to Frank √¢¬Ä¬ì that scene is also acknowledging the loss they feel because of AIDS.
You and Alfred have such a rapport – not just in the film, but in real life.
I√¢¬Ä¬ôve grown up in a theater family and I√¢¬Ä¬ôve lived my life in the creative arts √¢¬Ä¬ì half of the people in the creative arts are gay! The film’s an examination of the nature of love in many ways, but ordinary love.”
Lithgow says it was so easy and natural playing that love relationship with jovial Brit “Fred” Molina, another imposingly tall actor who has enjoyed a long successful heterosexual marriage and a long career in many a macho role, starting off with Raiders of the Lost Ark and taking a big villainous role in Spider-Man 2.
That√¢¬Ä¬ôs exactly how this relationship is viewed, and I think it√¢¬Ä¬ôs a sign of the times that this is actually happening. A huge name on Broadway where he is regularly up for Tonys, he won for best actor in 1973 for The Changing Room and in 2002 for Sweet Smell of Success. “People asking me: ‘Why did you take this part?
Is there a particular exchange between Ben and George that left an impression on you?
Oh, there are so many of them!
I do hope that√¢¬Ä¬ôs the case. It’s sort of unspoken conflict in a way. But it’s such a piece of theater. It√¢¬Ä¬ôs the moment when Ben apologizes to George for being less monogamous and less faithful, and yet reassures him and acknowledges the fact that they are essential to each other.
And since it’s a 40-year-long relationship between two gay men, there is such a history there: They’ve been through 40 extraordinary years; they’ve seen the terrible scourge of AIDS in the ’80s and ’90s; between them they’ve lost scours, if not 100s, of friends; they’ve somehow survived, and they have seen the sort of awakenings of freedom – this slow emergence from second-class citizenship through these gay marriage initiatives.
So, I think it’s a hopeful film. But besides the obvious answer – that it’s called acting – how do you take that platonic affection for each other to the next level?
It’s impossible to be self-conscious with Alfred. You can’t have a relationship of 40 years without having both a sense of humor and a sense of compassion and forgiveness.
It’s unacceptable.
Growing up with a queer dad has allowed Hannah to accept sexuality as a normal part of life. Her own kid, Frances, is a transgender, nonbinary teen, just like Hyde’s own 19-year-old child, Aud Mason-Hyde, who plays them in the movie. And he doesn’t stop there.
You’ve been friends for years.
